Environmental Health

The Livingston County Health Department's Environmental Health Team is here to support the health and safety of your business and home.

What We Do & Why It Matters

The Environmental Health Division of the Livingston County Health Department is dedicated to protecting public health by ensuring safe food, clean water, proper waste disposal, and effective control of disease-carrying pests.

We work to make sure:

  • The food you eat is fresh, healthy, and safe.

  • Your well water is clean and free from harmful contaminants.

  • Septic and geothermal systems are properly maintained and functioning safely.

  • Vector-borne diseases (like those carried by mosquitoes and ticks) are monitored and reduced through prevention efforts.

These services are essential for creating a healthy, safe environment where our residents can live, work, and thrive.

Education. Guidance. Inspections. Surveillance.

Our Environmental Health team plays a vital role in protecting the health of Livingston County residents through education, inspections, and disease prevention efforts.

Environmental health sanitarians conduct inspections and provide expert guidance in key areas such as:

  • Food safety

  • Private sewage systems

  • Private water supplies

These efforts help prevent the spread of disease and ensure the safety of our community’s everyday essentials.

In partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health, we also provide surveillance and response for vector-borne diseases. This includes:

  • Monitoring and testing for West Nile virus

  • Identification of disease-carrying vectors such as ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, and rodents

  • Complaint investigations related to public health risks

Proper identification and education are critical. We work to inform the public on safe, effective methods of prevention, control, and elimination of these health threats—reducing the risk of vector-borne illnesses across our communities.
